  • عنوان البحث : INCREASES ASPARTATE AMINOTRANSFERASE ACTIVITY NEGATIVELY CORRELATED WITH D-DIMER IN EARLY DIAGNOSED SARS-CoV-2 PATIENTS

    ملخص البحث :

SARS-CoV-2 was widely spread early in 2020. It causes unknown pneumonia with different organ complications. An increase in the liver enzymes activity and renal parameters were the most common problems associated with the SARS-CoV-2 infection. Studies reported the correlation between the increase in the liver enzyme activity AST and CRP and ferritin with reporting the correlation with Di-Dimer. This study aims to investigate the correlation between liver enzymes (AST and ALT) and renal parameters with laboratory parameters (D-Dimer, Ferritin, and CRP). Blood samples were withdrawn from 77 (35 controls and 42 patients) to investigate the liver enzymes, renal parameters, blood sugar, and laboratory parameters (D-Dimer, Ferritin, and CRP). The relationship between the increase in the liver enzymes and renal parameters with laboratory parameters increases with the SARS-Co-V-2 infection. 16 (38%) out of 42 patients were associated with severe SARS-CoV-2 illness. Liver enzymes activity ALT and AST were increased in 23 (55%) and 20 (48%) patients respectively. Renal parameters were increased in 16 (38%) patients. Only 11 out of 16 patients were suffering from severe illnesses and had an increase in liver enzymes activity, while only 7 (17%) patients had severe illnesses and an increase in renal parameters. AST activity had a negative correlation with D-Dimer. This study concluded that the increase in AST correlated negatively with the increase in D-Dimer in SARS-CoV-2 patients

  • عنوان البحث : COVID-19 infection causes insulin-resistance between hospitalised patients in Najaf governorate

    ملخص البحث :

A novel epidemic infection Coronavirus-19 (COVID-19) considered as one of the challenges in sustainable development. A new-onset of hyperglycaemia has been observed between many COVID-19 patients. The clear explanation of this elevation in fasting plasma glucose (FPG) was debuted. Here we investigate whether this increase is due to impaired insulin secretion or insulin resistance. 269 participants, group 1 (control, n = 46) group 2 (COVID-19 patients, n = 223). 27 Patients were excluded due to missing of their FPG results. FPG, liver enzymes (ALT, AST, and Alk. Phosphatase), b.urea, s.creatinine, s. insulin, C-peptide, D-dimer, and s.ferritin were measured. Our results showed that FPG was increased in 82% (161) patients and this increase was positively correlated with ferritin (r20.039, P-value 0.0013). There is no correlation between FPG with liver enzymes (ALT and AST). The level of insulin hormone and c-peptide were normal. Because there were no increase in insulin or c-peptide and the only relationship was between FPG and ferritin. Therefore, we concluded that COVID-19 infection could cause insulin resistance.

  • عنوان البحث : Novel Diagnostic and Prognostic Immunological Markers for Chronic Periodontitis in Makkah Community

    ملخص البحث :

The Aim: Investigating the role of Pentraxin-3 in comparison to tumor necrosis factor- α as a diagnostic and prognostic marker for chronic periodontitis. Methods: Pentraxin-3 and tumor necrosis factor- α levels were measured by Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay for Gingival Crevicular Fluid samples of 53 chronic periodontitis patients before and after periodontal treatment as well as from 50periodontally healthy subjects as a control group. Differences between both groups regarding clinical parameters and tested biomarkers were assessed and correlations between them were calculated. Results: The mean values of periodontal parameters were significantly reduced after treatment. Mean Pentraxin-3 and tumor necrosis factor- α levels were higher in chronic periodontitis patients than in the control group with a significant difference between both groups. Furthermore, these levels were reduced after treatment with a highly statistically significant difference. Positive correlations between the mean values of both markers levels, and clinical parameters were found whereas, Pentraxin-3 was more positively correlated. Conclusion: As Pentraxin-3 is more positively correlated with clinical parameters of chronic periodontitis than tumor necrosis factor- α, it could be a better diagnostic and prognostic marker for the disease. However, further large-scale studies on both genders are recommended to confirm their role as prognostic markers.
